Definición de Pordiosero: Que pide limosna. (Diccionario de la Real Academia Española)
El origen de esta palabra proviene de los mendigos y pedigüeños que piden y pedían limosna invocando a Dios, con fórmulas del tipo «una limosna, por Dios» o «déme algo, por Dios». Pordiosero salió de ese por Dios, al que se añadió el sufijo -ero, propio de los nombres de profesión (panadero, zapatero, torero…), por entender que tales mendigos eran prácticamente «profesionales», como en efecto sucedía en España entre los siglos XVI y XVII, y ejemplos abundantes de ello hay en la literatura: en El Lazarillo de Tormes (1554) y El Buscón (1605), sin ir más lejos. Existen varios refranes, frases hechas, que aluden al pordiosero:
-Gordo te veas y pordiosero seas.
Por «maldición de la gitana» se conoce este refrán, obviamente disuasorio del impulso caritativo. Concuerda con aquello que una vez le espetó uno a cierto mendigo metido en carnes de cuyo cuello pendía este rotulillo: «Tengo anvre.» «-Será hambre de ortografía, amigo, porque con ese talle…». -El Avaro al pordiosero, por quitarle algo, le quita el sombrero.
Se refiere al sombrero donde el mendigo recoge las limosnas. Critica, pues, a los que padecen tal ansia de dinero que incluso son capaces de robárselo a los que lo obtienen de caridad. (Espasa-Calpe)
Entre los sinónimos de Pordiosero tenemos a pobre, mendigo, pedigüeño, mendicante, desvalido, necesitado, mísero. Y además es una palabra que no posee antónimos.
Entre los Pordioseros se podría meter también a los profesionales de la Iglesia, que son profesionales del Por-Dios y lo llevan siempre en boca para obtener lo que quieren y aprovecharse así de las gentes.
Además existe una hierba conocida como hierba de los lazarosos o hierba de los pordioseros.
